enginePlease consider helping out...

Red Wing has a proud and distinguished history.  Wheat to leather, shoes to pottery, and natives to pioneers, Red Wing celebrates its diverse history throughout the community.  These historical recognitions help our residents and visitors better understand and appreciate what went into building our pretty Red Wing.

I represent a group that is working on saving another piece of Red Wing’s rich history.  In 1903 the Red Wing Motor Company began making motors for watercraft and industrial use.  For over 60 years up to 250 employees worked at their headquarters on Levee Road building world class motors.  Now we need your help to tell their story.

Our group, Red Wing Marine Museum, has acquired more than 35 of the original Red Wing motors along with other historic Mississippi River artifacts.  We are in the process of renovating a building and creating displays to better show residents, children and visitors, this nugget of Red Wing history.  Working with the City of Red Wing, our group has leased the former Water Works building at 935 Levee Road to house the Red Wing Marine Museum. This building (now part of the National Register of Historic Places) is adjacent to the river and was originally built in 1865 with local limestone and local craftsman.

Our group has a goal to complete renovations and to build displays to properly house these historical artifacts.  Our intent is to open the Red Wing Marine Museum to the public in the fall of 2013.  This is where we need your help.  We are in the process of raising $300,000.00 to complete the building renovations, create museum displays and give a stipend to an intern who will catalog and archive our artifacts.  Consider giving a tax deductible donation to our 501c3 non- profit, Red Wing Marine Museum, and help us with this worthy endeavor.  All donations of $1,000.00 or more will be honored and recognized with an engraved nameplate on display at the Museum entrance.

The Board of Directors of the Red Wing Marine Museum includes:  Kent Speight, Kevin Avery, Greg Genz and Marisa Dille.  We thank you in advance for your consideration and please contact me with questions about this important Red Wing project.
